Four leaf clovers are NOT a business/life strategy (credit: http://sarahsnodgrass.com/blog/)
Being half-Irish, I couldn’t go without posting on luck on a day like today
Luck is typically a very difficult subject to write about, considering it’s quite hard to define when somebody has gotten “lucky”. An example of this is a small business that starts up one year, and within 12 months, ends up with tons of venture capital, media exposure, high profit margins; in other words, an atypical experience in a sea of failure and struggle.
Did they truly get lucky, by having the right people stumble across their business, while they were in a really generous mood? Or was there a difference in their approach that led to success, doing what the triumphant 10% do, while 90% wallow in obscurity?
Well, as the great philosopher Abraham Simpson once said “A little from Column A, a little from Column B.”
Yes, while there is [...]

What happens when you mix the excitement of playing high stakes poker and the adrenaline of doing it with the best players of the world? You definite catch attention, and this is what Full Tilt has done with their Durrrr Challenge extravaganza. This little game, but mostly a dare, is simple. Tom “durrrr” Dwan, young poker hot shot and Full Tilt’s poker pro, threw a challenge in 2009. He said he could beat any player that was able to play against him 50,000 hands of No-Limit Texas Hold’em or Pot Limit Omaha with any money there put up, with a side bet and a thrilling plus. If he loses the winner would take $1.5 million plus all the winnings for the play involved; but if he wins, he would take the winnings plus $500,000 from his opponent. But there’s another condition. It must be played in 4 simultaneous head’s up tables and [...]

How To Beat The Tight-Aggressive Poker Player
Willy J wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
Winning poker players use different poker playing styles. It’s one of the beauties of poker that players with very different styles can be winning. So, to beat tight-aggressive means that you choose your starting hands carefully, folding all bad hands, but when you enter a pot you come in betting and raising like there’s no tomorrow.
The tight aggressive poker player is a winning poker player. These are the toughest opponents to play against in No-Limit Texas Hold’em. When possible, try to avoid playing against these players since your overall profit will be low even if you are able to outplay them. Tight-aggressive poker player is based on the premise that since you play few hands, most observant opponents will give you credit for having a strong hand when you bet or raise, and may throw their hand away.
Occasionally, they might even throw away a superior hand. The tight-aggressive [...]

Change of plans. I have left my MTT/SnG backer (on good terms). Here are my numbers since February ‘09:
Time period: 384 days (Feb. 26, 2009 – Mar. 16, 2010)
Events played (SnGs & MTTs): 11,869
Total profit (before split): $19,265
I’d like to formally thank my staker for providing the funds which allowed me to play thousands of tournaments on Full Tilt and PokerStars and gain the experience which has molded me into the improved poker player I am today. Of course I only hope to get better, but it feels different playing solely with my own money. I hope the bankroll management skills I have acquired during the staking arrangement will allow me to safely profit over a very long term.
Warning: many numbers to follow…
Instead of going for Supernova status (100,000 VPPs) by August 6, my new goal is to reach Supernova Elite (1,000,000 VPPs) before the end of the [...]

Very Good Tournament Poker Story
Willy J wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
I wasn’t planning on blogging about today’s tournament when I went to go play it, but after the way it unfolded, it’s become an impossibility not to talk about it.
I started off really hot in this tournament, but since I didn’t have the mindset to track my hands, I’m having a hard time remembering exact situations, but I’ll try to come up with a couple key hands.
I was really active in the first couple rounds and my stack size was adequately, but not greatly improved from the starting size. With the blinds at 75-150, I raise to 375 with AsTc. I get called in four spots and I’m already pretty uninterested in the pot. The board comes 632 with two spades though and I sense a bit of opportunity when it checks to me. I figure now is a good time to represent an overpair and [...]
