So I waited and waited. 27 hands…didn’t see a flop. Partway through, the seat to […]

That was for Mike Caro’s bit about how “aggression is rarely wrong in poker.”
Other favorites of mine are Doyle Brunson’s “Never go broke in an unraised pot,” the uncredited “Small hands, small pots; big hands, big pots” and the wildly popular, “If you can’t spot the fish in the first half-hour, it’s you.”
Most one-offs come from the greats, or get filtered down through the culture of the game. And like aphorisms everywhere, they are admirable for their clean, efficient encoding of deep truths.
Alas, there are others that abound in poker rooms that come up short in the wisdom department but are far more common and more commonly believed. I’d like to dissect a couple of them for you.
I hope there’s a poker lesson here, and […]

I ended up down about 30 BB’s about mid-way thru a 70 minute session. Before this week, I’d have re-loaded. But I decided to focus on performance rather than results - so I didn’t replenish. I tried to play good solid poker. Most players to my right were tight, so not much money was going to come from playing position - I’d have to rely on the loose players to my left to hang themselves.
While nobody “hung” themselves, I did manage to fight back and end up 10 BB’s ahead of my buy-in. Not bad, of course, and to top it off - even keeled the whole time with little focus on profit - only on playing solid. For the most part, mission accomplished!
Done for now - gonna go hit Target and maybe Cost Plus.
After dropping them off, I grabbed the laptop and my books and headed to Lowry’s. I read a fair amount from one of the new books. With additional wisdom fresh in my brain - combined with yesterday’s performance - I was ready to sit down for a few.
Right Limit - check
Right Table - check
Right Seat - check
Buy-in - 50 BB’s (Deepstack table - could have bought in for 200 BB’s)
Things went smashingly as I built off of yesterday’s mantra.
Performance = Good
Luck = Good
Results = Good
50 BB’s in 15 mins. Taking a break to enjoy a cheesesteak […]

Surely within an hour of this post some illiterate ass-hat will creatively design a comment which I’m sure will serve no other purpose than to push the human race down an evolutionary stair or two.
Now that I’ve pissed off any readers I’ll answer my question, only because it now amuses myself: Greed and Boredom. (Note that I didn’t mention “power” as power tends to come with a degree of responsibility, fuck responsibility) While the boredom aspect of this blog will likely be fairly obvious, I’m sure you’re shaking your head as to how greed comes into play here.
Well it’s quite simple.
It takes plenty of confidence and oodles of cash just to play in the World Series of Poker main event, but the world’s best rounders are making things even spicier by raising the stakes against one another.
Gold bracelets command respect for winners of series events, but big-time poker pros Daniel Negreanu and Phil Ivey added an extra $200,000 incentive for each other to win one or more of the 55 events this year, Negreanu said.
Negreanu’s limit Texas Hold ‘em win earlier this month got him $204,874 in prize money, but his bet with Ivey has nearly doubled that. Ivey can even the score if he wins the main event, a no-limit Texas Hold ‘em tournament that will mean millions of dollars for the winner and certain poker fame.
California psychologist Jerry Yang — who gave the famous “Shuffle up and deal” order on Friday — beat 6,357 others last […]
